16 Valentine's Day nails, from signature reds to classy heart design

Heart nail designs

No shape or symbol is as apt for celebrating Valentine's Day as a red love heart, and when done well, the effect can be both stylish and downright adorable. And for those looking to do their heart nail designs at home, Sophie Louise Martin has shared exactly how to do so in three easy steps - which can be applied to all of the heart designs below.

"A favorite design amongst all nail techs is the scattered heart design," says Sophie Louise Martin, which consists of micro love hearts painted onto each nail. "Not only does it look great but it's also relatively easy to recreate at home," she adds. Here's how:

  • Step 1: Apply base polish. "My favorite way to wear this design is with a classic nude base," says Sophie.
  • Step 2: Get dotting. "Take a small dotting tool and dab it into your chosen nail polish (red or gold looks great). Next, place two small dots onto the nail positioned next to each other."
  • Step 3: Join the dots. "Grab a fine line brush and start to drag the two dots diagonally down until they meet at a point. You'll then need to fill in any gaps and voila, there's your love heart."

There are so many ways to mix up a classic French manicure. One of our favourites is opting for a colourful tip like this deep wine shade. If you're attempting this at home, start by painting your base colour before drawing a curved line, using a thin brush, along the smile line, and filling in the tip.

15. Almond red French tips

If you have longer nails, almond-shaped French tips offer classic elegance no matter the occasion but look especially expensive with a lick of statement red. To recreate, we recommend investing in a French nail stamper, which will help you achieve uniform crescent-shaped lines.

16. Pastel pink French tips

With spring fast approaching, a pastel pink French nail look doubles as both a gorgeous (but understated) Valentine's Day look and a soft, everyday mani for when the warmer weather hits.

As a nail expert and enthusiast, I have a deep knowledge and firsthand expertise in the world of Valentine's Day nails. I understand the importance of elevating a standard manicure for this romantic occasion and staying in tune with the 2024 nail trends. From sophisticated solid shades to stylish nail art, there are endless possibilities to create the perfect Valentine's Day nails.

According to expert manicurist Sophie Louise Martin, Valentine's Day nail designs offer a way to embrace the most romantic time of the year without feeling over the top. A solid shade of pink or red can be a subtle nod to your valentine, while nail art designs can add a sense of adventure to your manicure.

One popular design is the scattered heart design, which consists of micro love hearts painted onto each nail. This design not only looks great but is also relatively easy to recreate at home. Sophie Louise Martin shares three easy steps to achieve this design:

Step 1: Apply a base polish, preferably a classic nude shade. Step 2: Use a small dotting tool to dab your chosen nail polish (red or gold) onto the nail, placing two small dots next to each other. Step 3: Grab a fine line brush and drag the two dots diagonally down until they meet at a point. Fill in any gaps, and there you have your love heart design.

For those looking for a more minimalistic approach, you can opt for subtle heart accents by painting micro red hearts onto a fresh, barely-there base. Alternatively, you can experiment with different shapes and sizes for a modern take on love heart nails.

If you're feeling adventurous, you can try negative space nails, where you select a nail or nails to feature a heart design by painting the shape with a detailing brush or using a stencil. For a luxurious twist, consider gold foil hearts on a milky sheer base, best suited for oval and sqouval nail shapes.

Red nails are a classic choice for Valentine's Day, and they are also one of the biggest 2024 nail trends. A classic red manicure is both timeless and on-trend, making it a subtle and classy nod to Valentine's Day. Dark red nails are also stylish and perfect for this romantic occasion. You can top off your chosen wine-like shade with a high-shine top coat for a polished finish.

Pink nails are supremely flattering and a sweet way to embrace V-day without going overboard. A pastel pink manicure remains wearable well into the spring season. You can experiment with different pink shades, such as pink guava or breezy blush, to achieve a gradient effect or a glossy, minimalist look.

French tip nails are a timeless choice that can be elevated with a touch of Valentine's red or pink. Burgundy tips or almond-shaped French tips offer a twist on the classic French manicure, while pastel pink French tips add a soft and understated touch.

To achieve these stunning Valentine's Day nails, you can explore a variety of nail polish brands such as Nailberry, OPI, and Essie. Additionally, nail art tools like dotting tools and fine line brushes can assist you in creating intricate designs. Remember to invest in a high-shine top coat for a glossy and expensive-looking finish.

With these ideas and trends in mind, you can create beautiful and stylish Valentine's Day nails that will steal your heart and remain wearable long after the romantic holiday has passed.
